What do I need to get a LR/MR licence?
Class LR, MR, road rules knowledge test
You must answer at least 8 out of 10 multiple choice questions correctly on the road rules for heavy vehicles.
You don’t need to take this test if you already have an Australian heavy vehicle licence.
To apply for the next higher class, you must hold your current licence for a set period.
This period:
- must have occurred in the last 5 years
- can be continuous or made up of different individual lengths of time (excluding any time that your licence was suspended, surrendered, cancelled or expired).

What can I drive with a LR licence?

- A class C vehicle
- A bus or truck (including a prime mover or a mobile crane) not more than 8t GVM.
Note: You may also tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 9t GVM.
What do I need to get and MR Licence?
This period:

What do I need to get an HC Licence?
Class HC road rules knowledge test
You must answer at least 8 out of 10 multiple choice questions correctly on the road rules for heavy vehicles.
You don’t need to take this test if you already have an Australian heavy vehicle licence.

What can I drive with an HC Licence?

- A class HR vehicle
- A truck (including a prime mover or mobile crane) over 8t GVM with a trailer of more than 9t GVM.
How do I upgrade my licence to a class MC?
Current licence class | Minimum length of time | Next higher licence class |
HR or HC | 1 year | MC |
To upgrade to a class MC licence, you must:
- have held a class HR or HC licence for a minimum period of 1 year
- complete the driver licence application/renewal form (F3000)
- show your evidence of identity documents
pass a test, Heavy vehicle road rules knowledge test
You must answer at least 8 out of 10 multiple choice questions correctly on the road rules for heavy vehicles.
You don’t need to take this test if you already have an Australian heavy vehicle licence.
- if required
- declare that you are medically fit to drive the class of vehicle (note: if you have a medical condition that is likely to adversely affect your ability to drive or ride safely, you will be required to provide a medical certificate from your doctor stating that you are medically fit to drive or ride safely).
If you currently hold a class HR licence, you must complete the Drive Multi-Combination Vehicle (TLIC4006A) training course through 1 of the approved multi-combination training providers.
When you have met the competency standard, the training provider will issue you with a statement of attainment for ‘class MC vehicle’.
If you currently hold a class HC licence, and you are applying for a class MC licence, you must either:
- complete a Driver Multi-Combination Vehicle (TLIC4006A) training course through any of the approved multi-combination training providers
or
complete the multi-combination driving experience declaration form (F3272) and provide evidence confirming your ability to drive a class MC vehicle.
What can I drive with an MC licence?

- A class HC vehicle
- A B-double (prime mover towing 2 semitrailers, with 1 semitrailer supported at the front and connected to the other semitrailer)
- A road train (motor vehicle, other than a B-double, towing 2 or more trailers)
